Stipulative Definition: Reality
Reality is a fundamental concept in NPS System Ontology.
In philosophical discourse, the boundaries of what is meant by reality are sometimes blurred.
At times, reality is understood in a strictly ontological sense; at other times, an author uses the term to denote what is perceived.
To enable its precise application as a philosophical tool, NPS System Ontology stipulatively distinguishes between different types of reality:
In NPS System Ontology, every being is a system and therefore something structurally manifold in which multiple properties are united into a unity.
Every system is not only an ontological truth of its own, but also an ontological reality of its own that is given in Being and appears within it.
Everything that is actual within the boundaries of a system is regarded as its system-internal or intrinsic reality.
Everything that is actual outside the boundaries of a system constitutes its system-external or extrinsic reality.
Within the system-internal or intrinsic reality of a system, its perspectival reality can be identified.
It is ontologically constituted by what is actual within the system-internal perspective of a system.
Total reality is the totality of all Being.
Examples:
As a human being, I am a being and therefore - according to NPS System Ontology - an ontological reality.
My heart, which beats within my body, is, on the one hand, an ontological reality and, on the other, part of my system-internal reality.
Whatever I see, think, or feel, I experience from within my individual perspective. It is therefore part of my perspectival reality.
As a being, I am part of total reality.
